Why I Love To Swim

In this post, Los Angeles-based swimmer Alexander Konetzki (@alexanderkonetzki) shares how the MySwimPro app has helped him train for Masters Swimming competitions for over 3 years!

Meet Alex

Hi MySwimPro Community! My name is Alexander Konetzki and I am from Marina Del Rey, California.

I was born human, but spiritually, I am a dolphin — probably Pacific Bottlenose. I’ve always loved the water. My mom tells me that I was taken off the diving board at age 6 months, totally submerged, and came up smiling like I had just discovered the secret to a happy life.

I am a proud Chicagoan, though I recently moved to Southern California. It was for love! But from an aquatic perspective, this was an excellent move. It’s a little bit sunnier and warmer here than my beautiful hometown.

I’m a lawyer by trade and spent four years working in politics. I’ve also worked at a tech company, been a lead singer in a rock band, studied improv at Second City, and lived abroad for a year. It’s good to be part of this community.

My Swimming Background

I was in the water on a regular basis from the time I was 6 months old. I did a combination of YMCA and club competitive swimming from age 6-14. I swam competitively during high school, not in college. But during that period and after, I still got in the water to work out occasionally.

About 3 years ago, I got the desire to race again, and that’s how I discovered U.S. Masters Swimming. Since then, I’ve competed locally, statewide, nationally and even at the FINA Masters World Championships in Budapest in 2017!

How I Train With MySwimPro

Before I found the MySwimPro app, I would Google random workouts online and print them out. Now, with the app on my Apple Watch, I am more interested and engaged. I love the big library of workouts! Also keeps me on track and on time during workouts. It has provided a structure to follow towards achievement, well-being, and aquatic greatness.

Why I Love To Swim

I want to become U.S. Masters Swimming national champion in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM, and 200 IM.

My goal is to become a great breaststroker and not run out of gas during the breaststroke leg of the IM – as I currently always do! My reach goal is to become a world champion in any of the above events. My health goals include, heart-health, aerobic fitness, mental health, and being able to truly rock a Speedo.

There is a natural position in which each individual body sits near the surface of the water. Some people call it “the pocket”. Everyone should spend some quality quiet time in the pool finding their pocket. No matter what stroke you’re swimming, you should try to swim it within the pocket. It’s the path of least resistance.

“In a world that’s as fast, crowded, and clamorous as ours, the only place I can be truly at peace is underwater.”

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Alex! We’re so excited to have you on board as an ambassador, and can’t wait to hear how you swim this year!
