Safety is extremely important no matter where you swim, but it’s a good idea to take extra care when you’re swimming in a new place. Fares did research ahead of time to make sure he understood where swimming is and isn’t allowed, where buoys are located and what boat traffic looks like. Then, he was able to plan his route!

He brought along all of his open water gear, too:

The Workout

After gearing up, it was time for Fares to hit the water! He decided to shoot for at least 1,000 meters. To track his total distance, time, average pace and heart rate, Fares started an Open Water Swim in the MySwimPro app on his Apple Watch.

As he swam, Fares took in Chicago’s amazing skyline. The view was unlike what he’s used to swimming at home in Michigan! He kept close to shore and focused on having fun and maintaining his feel for the water rather than pushing for maximum distance. When traveling, it’s smart to ease up on your typical workout intensity until you acclimate to your new environment.
