Ariarne Titmus Wins 200m Freestyle

Ariarne Titmus of Australia added a second gold medal to her trophy case in the women’s 200-meter freestyle, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 1:53.50.

This final was speedy — 3 swimmers were swimming faster than world record pace at the first 100. It was looking like Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong had this race in the bag, but Titmus surged ahead in the final 15 meters to touch first.

Haughey took silver (the first ever swimming medal for Hong Kong!), and Penny Oleksiak of Canada took bronze. Katie Ledecky, who won gold in this event in 2016, finished 5th. She had a tough double in this session, with the 1500 free final later in the morning.

After reacting in an epic way to Titmus’s 400 free win, coach Dean Boxall reigned in the hype for tonight’s performance. But he was still pretty excited!
