In the heats of the men’s 200-meter butterfly in Tokyo, Syrian national swimmer and MySwimPro Ambassador Ayman Klzie broke the national record, officially becoming the first Syrian swimmer to break the 2-minute barrier in the event.
Klzie’s 1:59.57 was speedy enough to win his heat, and rank him 32nd overall in the 200 butterfly qualifying heats. This swim also qualifies him for 2021 Short Course World Championships and 2022 World Championships.
This new record joins more than a dozen other Syrian national records that Klzie has broken over the years, ranging from the 50-meter butterfly to the 400 IM.
Klzie’s journey to Tokyo wasn’t easy. The war in Syria made training difficult, and he ended up moving to Thailand for better pool access and coaching. Learn more about Klzie and his journey to Tokyo:
