Swimming isn’t just for kids, athletes, or Olympians. It’s a life skill. One that can transform your health, confidence, and sense of freedom at any age. Just ask my mom, Hala Besmar. At 62 years old, she decided it was finally her turn to learn. And what happened next? Pure inspiration.

From Swim Mom to First-Time Swimmer

For decades, my mom was the ultimate swim parent. Early morning practices, long competitions, hours in the bleachers, she was always there, cheering me on throughout my career as a competitive swimmer and coach.

But there was one thing she never did for herself: learn to swim.

“Watching my kids have fun in the water was enough for me,” she said. “Getting them lessons, taking them to swim meets, that made me happy.”

Still, I saw something in her. She gave so much to everyone around her. It was time for her to invest in herself.

So I surprised her with a swim cap, goggles, and a suit.

Her response? “But I don’t swim!”
Mine: “Now you will.”

The First Splash: From Fear to Freedom in 27 Days

Let’s be real, she was TERRIFIED! Even blowing bubbles was a challenge. “It was like learning a foreign language,” she said.

But we made a commitment. Every day, 30–45 minutes in the pool. Just her and me. No pressure. Just progress.

Fifteen lessons later—less than a month in—she swam the full length of the pool.

That moment? Unforgettable. She reached the wall, burst into laughter, jumped up and down, water flying everywhere. “I did it! I did it!” she shouted.

Why Adult Swim Lessons Are About More Than Swimming

Learning to swim as an adult is less about technique and more about mindset.

“When you’re a kid, you don’t overthink it,” she said. “But as you get older, fear builds up.”

That’s what makes adult lessons so powerful: breaking through years of hesitation and proving to yourself that you can do it.

“When I finally floated, I felt like a swimmer,” she said. “It was one of the best feelings of my life.”

Swimming Isn’t Just a Skill. It’s a Doorway.

For adults, learning to swim isn’t just about the water. It’s about health, safety, and unlocking experiences you thought were out of reach.

Inspired by my mom, I wrote How Not to Drown: The Adult Beginner’s Guide to Learning How to Swim to help others start their journey, too.

Her advice? “Try it. Just try. Don’t let fear hold you back from living fully.”

Your Turn to Dive In

Millions of adults learn to swim every year. If my mom could do it at 62, you definitely can.

You’re not too old. You’re not too late. You’re just one decision away from changing your life.

The water’s waiting. Are you ready?
