Women’s 100 Freestyle Prelims
Number 1 seed (and defending gold medalist) Simone Manuel sits 6th heading into tonight’s semifinals, swimming a 54.47. 2016 Olympian Abby Weitzeil was the only swimmer under 54 seconds in prelims, taking the top seed in 53.52. After finishing 3rd in the 100 back final earlier this week, Olivia Smoliga turned it on this morning, finishing 2nd in prelims with a new personal best of 54.00. Men’s 200 Backstroke Prelims
Destin Lasco leads the pack into semi’s with a 1:56.88. Bryce Mefford looked smooth, cruising into the second place spot in 1:57.51. 2016 gold medalist Ryan Murphy is 6th, appearing content with a 1:57.95 that gives him a solid spot in semi’s. Women’s 200 Breaststroke Prelims
The 2016 Olympic Trials champion in this event, Lilly King dominated her heat, maintaining a solid lead the entire race, finishing in 2:25.82 for a 3rd place spot going into semi’s. Annie Lazor is our #1 seed after prelims, swimming a 2:23.63. After missing an Olympic berth by 0.02 last night in the 200 IM, Madisyn Cox didn’t compete in the 200 breaststroke.

Men’s 200 IM Prelims
Michael Andrew was the star of the show in today’s prelims. He held onto a solid lead during his heat, dropping about 0.6 from his entry time for a new best time of 1:56.25. Ryan Lochte finally made an appearance, finishing second in 1:58.48. Carson Foster (1:58.95) and Chase Kalisz (1:59.14) sit in 3rd and 4th going into tonight’s semi’s. Men’s 800 Freestyle Final
Bobby Finke qualified for Tokyo, winning the 800 by almost 2 seconds, in 7:48.22. In second place is Michael Brinegar, who will likely head to Tokyo as well (7:49.94), overtaking Ross Dant, who looked like he had the #2 spot in the bag early on in the race. He took 3rd in 7:50.66. Men’s 200 Breaststroke Final
Nic Fink took control in the last 50 of the men’s 200 breast, winning the event in a 2:07.55 and qualifying for his first Olympics. Will Licon battled it out with Andrew Wilson for 2nd, with Wilson touching the wall first in 2:08.32. Kevin Cordes won’t swim the 200 breast in Tokyo, having finished 4th in 2:10.06. Women’s 100 Freestyle Semifinal
2016 gold medalist Simone Manuel surprised all of us in semi’s, finishing 9th overall and missing finals by just 0.02! She spent a few weeks out of the water in April, and has been fighting to get in racing shape for trials.
Olivia Smoliga and Natalie Hinds tied for 1st in 53.55, another personal best for both swimmers. Abbey Weitzeil is 3rd in 53.66. Men’s 200 Backstroke Semifinal
After what appeared to be very comfortable prelims swims, both Ryan Murphy and Bryce Mefford turned up the heat for semi’s. Murphy is in 1st going into tomorrow’s finals (1:55.60), followed by Austin Katz (1:56.26) and Mefford (1:56.57). View full results from the men’s 200 backstroke semifinal >
Women’s 200 Butterfly Final
This race was a battle between Hali Flickinger and Regan Smith. Smith went out fast, but Flickinger stuck to her race strategy, and it paid off. She finished first in 2:05.85 (setting a new US open record and personal best), followed by Smith in 2:06.99. Both women have already qualified for Tokyo in other events (the 400 IM for Flickinger and 100 backstroke for Smith), and expressed excitement to race together in Tokyo. Men’s 100 Freestyle Final
Caeleb Dressel asserted his dominance in the 100 free tonight, throwing down a 47.39 to tie the current US Open record and punch his ticket to Tokyo. Zach Apple took 2nd in 47.72, adding another event to his Olympics roster after qualifying in the 800 free. Blake Pieroni (48.16) and Brooks Curry (48.19) make the team as well as relay swimmers. Women’s 200 Breaststroke Semifinal
Teammates Lilly King and Annie Lazor battled it out in semi’s with just 0.07 separating them as they took the 1st and 2nd spots heading into finals. Men’s 200 IM Semifinals
Michael Andrew gave us a good show again tonight, holding faster than world record pace for the first 150 and a major lead in his heat. He finished in 1:55.26 and is #1 going into finals tomorrow. Chase Kalisz (1:57.19), Kieran Smith (1:57.61) and Carson Foster (1:57.77) are in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, with Ryan Lochte in 6th, finishing in 1:58.65.
