American Bobby Finke is the first ever Olympic champion in the men’s 800-meter freestyle. His last 50 was one for the history books!

It looked like Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy had this race in the bag, setting an early lead all the way from lane 8, but Finke had something to say about that. He was in 5th for the majority of the race, but surged forward in the last 50 meters, splitting 26.39 to touch first in a 7:41.87.

This is the first time the men’s 800 has been contested at the Olympic Games. Finke has been among the top swimmers in the world in this event since 2018.
