The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainty on the swimming community. The Olympics have been postponed to 2021, many swim meets and open water races are canceled, and millions of swimmers around the world are unable to train due to pool and beach closures.

The pandemic situation varies widely from country to country — and even city to city. To get a look at how swimmers are feeling, we surveyed our global community about pool access and their comfort level swimming right now. More than 500 swimmers responded! Check out these highlights.

Pool & Open Water Access

The majority of swimmers don’t have access to a pool or open water. With many pools and beaches closed around the world, that is not surprising. Others have access to open water, a pool, or both.

Remaining Optimistic

About 90% of swimmers think they’ll have access to a swimming facility in the next 3 months. Others don’t think they’ll hit the pool until summer of 2021.

Differing Comfort Levels

About one quarter of respondents aren’t comfortable swimming in a public pool right now. Others are willing to swim, but will take precautions, such as wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. 35% feel totally comfortable swimming as usual.
